Social Distancing and Coordination

The social distance critical to alleviate the spread of COVID-19 is quite insufficient. In order to contribute to the literature, “(1) When a rare virus such as COVID-19 appears, when the total level of social distance has natural inertia; (2) Open national public statements are essential to reduce this inertia and adjust the public’s behavior to a new, optimal social distance level. (3) When individuals are not adequately informed about optimal social distance levels over time, national communication is more effective than local communication. Available in English. Read More →

Older adults living under social distancing: possibilities for tackling COVID-19 [Originally published in Rev. bras. geriatr. gerontol., vol.23 no.2]

Data from the latest bulletin from the Ministry of Health, dated April 4, 2020, revealed 10,278 cases and 431 deaths, with more than 80% of fatalities caused by the new coronavirus involving older people, and almost the same number having at least one risk factor constantly related to COVID-19, with an emphasis on heart disease and diabetes. Los profesionales de la salud son particularmente susceptibles a la infección. En Brasil, así como en otros países, miles de profesionales de la salud fueron separados de sus actividades profesionales por haber adquirido la infección y muchos murieron como consecuencia de la COVID-19. Los datos de los equipos de profesionales de la salud en la línea de frente de la atención de casos de COVID-19 muestran agotamiento físico y mental, dificultades en la toma de decisiones y ansiedad por el dolor de perder pacientes y colegas, además del riesgo de infección y la posibilidad de transmisión a familiares. Data is aggregated daily from official sources with the most updated numbers, providing a reliable, free and simple resource for researchers, health authorities and general public. Interactive pages in English and Portuguese are available, containing maps, graphs and tables with all the data.
