Texture – an open science manuscript editor [Originally published in eLife in July/2017]

The Substance project released in 24 July 2017 the Alpha3 version of the Texture editor, which reads and produces XML files according the Journal Article Tag Suite (JATS) used by SciELO to structure scientific texts. The emerging system of online scholarly communication incorporates a technological and ideologically approach different from the traditional one, where the articles initially appear as preprints versions and are modified until reaching the final version. In case of errors, these same technologies provide efficient opportunities to make partial or total corrections and even retractions, associating to the path of a document the history of its versions. On the immediate rejection of manuscripts without external peer review

Not all texts received by scientific journals are sent to external evaluation. The arbitration process in the double blind system implies a high liability for editors and reviewers, and the burden of this process ends up expressed in a lengthy evaluation process, with direct effects on authors (who wait too long to receive a decision) and on readers (that may have access to delayed data). We used some data on the management of Revista de Sociologia e Política to think about the benefits and losses by rejecting original articles based on preliminary analysis by the editors (desk review evaluation), without requiring reviews issued by referees external to the editorial board. International course updated SciELO network professionals on the new methodological platform

The SciELO network collections of national quality journals operate in a decentralized manner in 15 countries following common objectives, principles, methodologies and technologies. To achieve the main objective of contributing to improving the quality, visibility, use and impact of the journals, the network promotes the development of skills and scientific communication national infrastructures following the state of the art and has as a principle to maximize the interoperability of journals and articles on the Web. Thus, one of the most recent advances in the operational platform of SciELO collections is the adoption of full texts structure in XML, which motivated the updating course on the methodological platform, held in June 6-10 in São Paulo, with the participation of 16 representatives from Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, Paraguay, Spain and Uruguay. Zika Fast Track

How can scientific journals assist in the response to Public Health Emergencies? The journal Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz has innovated by creating a fast track for manuscripts submitted on the topic of the Zika Virus. The fast track procedure allows manuscripts to be posted on-line within 24 hours of submission making the data within them available to reader scrutiny and sharing while the manuscripts undergo peer-review. The adoption of English among SciELO Brazil journals has been increasing

The adoption of the English language is one of the advances that SciELO is promoting in order to increase the insertion, visibility and international impact of journals and the research they communicate. In recent years, the adoption of English has growing consistently among SciELO journals, which, from 2014 reached the milestone of publishing more in English than in Portuguese. The expectation of SciELO is that in the 2 to 3 forthcoming years 75% of the articles will be published in English and 40 to 50% in Portuguese. Read More →

Launch of Research Integrity & Peer Review journal

The reliability of the research record should be of concern to everybody, yet it has attracted remarkably little study. A new journal of Research Integrity & Peer Review was recently launched at the World Conference on Research Integrity in Rio de Janeiro. The advanced management of manuscript evaluations was the focus of the first ScholarOne refresher course at SciELO

The idea for the refresher course SciELO-ScholarOne, held August 7 in the auditorium of FAPES in São Paulo, came from the need to further improve the level of professionalization of the editorial teams of the SciELO journals that use ScholarOne.
